Alberta Canucklehead

So I'm just a girl in the world of the Oilers and Flames, being a shining beacon of inspiration to get everyone to quit their erroneous ways and become Canucks Fans. The progress is decidedly slow.

Other than that, I'm a third year Education Student at the University of Lethbridge, majoring in Social Studies. Because let's face it, politics and history are pretty awesome.

I realize I look fourteen in one of those pictures, but just stay with me. And yes, that is a cow. And a milking parlor. And a tractor.

I also realize that this has absolutely nothing to do with my theme, but I figured this is one of my last blog posts, so I’m just going to go buck wild. (Sorry blog reviewer. P.S Mysterious blog reviewer….you’re awesome (= )

After doing homework fairly solidly since 2 o’clock, I’m sick of it. And I still have stats to do. Lest you think this is a rant about how much work I have to do, don’t worry, it’s just the background information. I’m starting to look forward to summer. I know, I shouldn’t be looking 4 weeks into the future and should focus myself into the here and now and get all my work done and can you tell I just talked to my mother?

So in the spirit of assimilating both of those things, I’m going to write a blog post about what I’m doing this summer.

First, the pictures. I work on a dairy farm; my brother’s dairy farm to be specific. During the summer, an average day includes getting up at 5AM to milk and feed cows. I have breakfast at 8 and then work from 9-12 doing whatever needs to be done on the farm, such as field work, mending fences, moving cows, and all that jazz. After lunch, there’s usually a nap, and then I milk again from around 3:30, 4ish until 6.

To explain the pictures: The first one is me and my “pet” cow. The second is the milking parlor I spend approx 2.5 hours a day in during the summer. And the third picture is the tractor that I spend many many many many MANY hours on doing field work.

I’ve worked on this farm since I was 16, so I’m kind of an old hand. My brother and I have very similar thinking processes, and we work together wonderfully. Plus, he’s 17 years older than me, so I’d like to think that we’re making up for the time that most people have when they’re growing up with their siblings. And my sister in law just had a baby, so I get to see the little fella as well. So yes, milking cows is the main portion of my summer. I realize it’s a little bit hick, but after this, it’s all city for me, so I’ll be a little bit “country” while I can.

Secondly, I’m going skydiving in June for my birthday. My boyfriend’s brother has the same birthday as me (June 14), and so we’re going together. It’s going to be great.

Third, I’m going to be driving to Calgary a lot. My boyfriend is staying there for the summer, but on the plus side, it’s 2.5 hrs from Lethbridge to his house, and only 2 from my parent’s house. And who says there’s no bright side?

Lastly, for May and June I’m going to be volunteering one day a week at my old elementary/junior high school. This is something I’ve done for the past 2 years as well, and I love it. A lot of the teachers are my old teachers so they let me do some pretty cool stuff. (Last year, I planned the school’s grade 9 graduation).

Sorry this got a little bit long. As you can see, I’m not going on any trips or anything :( But nonetheless, I can’t wait.

So good luck on papers, assignments, and finals everyone. I hope your summer is great :)
